Marie Laveau's (supposed) grave. Louis No. 1 cemetery, New Orleans LA. Feb 2005.

There were a lot of tourists here. It was difficult to politely get a decent shot. Most seemed to think that I was going to -snap- and move along, and got kindof irritated when I started trying to find a decent angle & light metering. Grrr...

However, by eavesdropping on the tour guides I found out about the XXX's: come to the cemetery at night, steal a brick from another grave, and use it to make three X's on Marie Laveau's grave. Make a wish, call out to her, and knock on her wall twice. If your wish comes true, you're supposed to come back and circle your X's. Surprisingly few X's were circled.

We don't think this is even her real place of rest, though--nearby there's a tomb made of black rock, unnamed, covered in many more...frenzied...XXXs. I thought that was hers before I saw the plaque on the white tomb.

*assumes Tyler Durden voice* damn tourists...

I really like the way that corner fades. It's a very rough photo, and I like that. The only issue I have is that maybe there should be some highlights or more white near the candles. They fade out, which lessens the effect and throws off the balance. Just more contrast in general would help a lot.

Duly noted. I've been applying the developer with a paintbrush and throwing it ine stop bath whenever I think it's done...so most of my recent pieces are based on guesswork and sloppy measurments. There is a kind of method I'm working on though, I'm sure...I too like the rough look, but need to perfect my VISION.

I love this. Could you tell me how to find it? I'm going next month; on my last trip I tried finding her tomb but was put off by a few of my group who thought I was going to be cursed! :)

hey there,
if i remember correctly, this tomb is in Louis #1 cemetery. if you take a tour they'll point it out, but it's pretty easy to find just by wandering around... sorry i can't give more accurate directions, it's been a few years since i've been back to new orleans!

Thank you very much! I just returned from there, and we didn't have time to tour the cemeteries, but I heard from a few friends down there that they do point it out. Apparently it's quite the tourist attraction!
